Magic Shifts (Kate Daniels, #8)

by Ilona Andrews

Magic is coming and going in waves in post-Shift Atlanta—and each crest leaves danger in its wake in this gripping novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Kate Daniels series.

After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate—former Beast Lord Curran Lennart—are adjusting to a very different pace. While they’re thrilled to escape all the infighting, Kate and Curran know that separating from the Pack completely is a process that will take time.

But when they learn that their friend Eduardo has gone missing, Kate and Curran shift their focus to investigate his disappearance. As they dig further into the merc’s business, they discover that the Mercenary Guild has gone to hell and that Eduardo’s recent assignments are connected in the most sinister way…

An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it—before it takes their city apart piece by piece.

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.

The Kate Daniels series has to be one of my favorite series of all time. The world that the Ilona Andrews writing team has built in this magical Atlanta is, well, magical. Their ability to describe the monsters that Kate, Curran and the rest of the gang have to face always amazes me. They have the ability to make me laugh, cry and I’m always on the edge of my seat while listening to Kate try to save those around her.

In this Magic Shifts, Kate and Curran have given up control of the Pack. They are not allowed at the Keep. Jim is trying to juggle the political battle, now that he is the Beast Lord and ruling over all the clans. He knows that his power isn’t absolute at this time and that he is walking a very fine line. So there is nothing he can do when, Eduardo, a member of Clan Heavy goes missing and Mahon, leader of Clan Heavy, doesn’t seem concerned. However, George, Mahon’s daugher and Eduardo’s girlfriend, goes to Kate and Curran for help. I don’t want to go into too much more detail, so as not to spoil anything for people who haven’t read this book yet.

There are ghouls and djinn which are new this series. We also have Ghastek, our favorite navigator. Roland and Saimon also make appearances. We even get to see a lot of Dali, and I just love her to pieces. I love seeing how she is handling being consort to the Beast Lord.

Magic Shifts is a another great installment to the Kate Daniels series. There is a lot that takes place and you see the changes coming for Kate and Curran and many of their friends. Many have to make tough decisions, some already have made those decisions. I can’t wait to see where Ilona Andrews take the series from here. If you haven’t tried this series, I highly recommend it, but you will need to start at the beginning or you will be lost.

Narration
Reneé Raudman continues to be an excellent pairing for this series. She does a great job with the growing cast of characters and their many different voices and accents. She has the exceptional ability to really bring the emotion of the story to life. I think Ms. Raudman has a great ability to make me laugh or cry along with the story. While I could probably pick up an arc of this book in print, I will continue to wait for this series and pick up on release day on audio. I also wasn’t even willing to wait for a review audio. I went ahead got it from Audible so I could have it on release day. This is an audio only series for me.
