Aisling is back and slightly less clueless than before. She’s attending a conference, looking for a mentor to teach her how to harness her Guardian powers. Rather than having any luck, she seems to be tied to a couple murdered Guardians. Lucky, Aisling is not. She’s also far out of her depth when it comes to dealing with dragons – and a certain green dragon in particular. We don’t see as much of Jim, Aisling’s demon in Newfoundland form, as the first book. In some ways, Jim reminds me of Bartimaeus from Jonathan Stroud’s series. Rene the French taxi driver is back, which is interesting, since the book is set in Budapest. There were enough subtle hints in this book to make me think that Rene is more than just a taxi driver. Well, I had considered it in the first book, too, but the hints were stronger in this book.
