This was a different experience for me to read a first person narrative from a male teenager’s point of view. I had conflicting emotions as I read each page. The wonder of falling in love along with the angst of standing on death’s doorstep.
Unfortunately, I have personally seen children struggling with cancer. Some who’ve won the fight and others who’ve lost. Johnson gives a completely precise depiction of the trials of the treatment process.
By the title alone, I would have never guessed the content of this story, yet I believe it was the perfect choice. When you think the moments you have left are numbered, it is important to remember every single one. Hannah is positive Oliver will pull through and gives him the tools to document his treatment. She believes he will look back on that time in his life and know the strength he has inside of him. Along with his strength during his treatment, Oliver also records the stages in which he fell in love with Hannah down to the exact moment.
While you may shed some tears reading this incredible story, the journey to the end is defiantly worth it.
Thank you to Amber L. Johnson for providing me with a copy of Where We Fell in exchange for a honest review.
