Thor has always been one of the more open storylines in the Marvel line up, we get all sorts of odd occurrences from radioactive rock men (hello silver age) to a space horse taking up the mantel. But this one is one that basically drew a line in the sand, and if I’m being honest drove me crazy. Thor is now a woman, and it nearly broke some people. Of course most of these people did not bother reading the comics so they don’t see what happened, nor do they care…it’s argument for arguments sake. However, as someone who has really enjoyed reading Thor in all it’s forms for a little while now I can say that this one is a strong storyline on it’s own and definitely worth checking out.
Original Sin was the lead up to Thor Odinson becoming “unworthy” of his hammer Mjolnir, and now someone else is carrying it and no one knows just who she is. She wields the hammer like it was meant for her, calling on powers Odinson never did, and taking on bad guys without a second thought. She’s unapologetically feminist and not afraid to take chances. I’m in love. I really adore that they brought back the whole time limit thing when it comes to Mjlonir, and appreciated the suspense of having Thor being separated from it for long periods of time. We even get to see just how Thor and Odin respond to this new player..hint…it’s not with open arms.We also get to know why she uses the title of Thor instead of picking a name for herself….and she never really says she’s Thor, other people do.
The writer for this series is the same as the writer for God of Thunder, so there is consistency and it still feels like a great Thor comic. The art is also still fantastic, and remains one of my favorite of the current Marvel comics that I do read.
I’ve already read the next volume, and I can’t wait to share it with you guys because AHHH! We totally get to find out who the epic woman is.
