In the Heat of the Bite was another quick, cute, fun read in this series. This time we’re following Blaire’s coven sister, Rhiannon, and James’ fellow vampire, Matthew. Rhiannon just wants to see her sister, but her crotchety aunt won’t let her. This causes Rhi to throw a tantrum, stirring up a huge storm. Matthew sees her, intends to rescue her, but realizes that she’s creating the storm. Rhi doesn’t need to be saved, but she does need to make her aunt like her, and Matthew is certainly likable.

In the Heat of the Bite is a kind of fake relationship turned real, but only a little. I was expecting more from this trope, but it doesn’t go quite how I expected. Rhiannon gets this idea that if Matthew courts her, she’ll more respectable because he has a title and plenty of money. In exchange, she’ll give him blood. But Matthew is too much of a gentlemen for that, which was super sweet! He refuses to take her innocence or her blood until they’re properly wed!

There’s not much of a plot other than that, which was disappointing. There are a few bits where Rhi’s powers go wonky when she’s around Matthew, and he suddenly can’t feed on anything except for her blood. But neither of those really go anywhere. Then his creator is coming around and being troublesome, but again, not much from that either. The romance is really front and center, and it’s really cute, so I didn’t mind too much. I just wish all of these great plot threads had been developed more, or not introduced at all.

In the Heat of the Bite was a good read. Nothing terribly exciting or special, but I enjoyed it.
