I absolutely adored Our Demented Play Date. It's a fun coming out tale with a really sweet romance. Sarah has known she was gay, but has never been with a girl before, and isn't ready to come out. Rachel, on the other hand, is out and proud. She likes to tease Sarah, who has endless questions about being gay, and I just thought that was super cute! Sarah is so awkward and can't help asking Rachel all of this stuff, which of course sets off Rachel's gaydar. Sarah does get the confidence to tell Rachel that she likes her, and BOOM. Romance blossoms! There is sex, but nothing graphic. It's kind of fade to black after giving us enough detail about the direction things are going. Plus, the girls have some cute post-coitus conversation.
I really liked how Our Demented Play Date handled coming out. After telling Rachel, Sarah has to tell her best friends who are completely accepting (and not surprised) of her being gay. Then there's the matter of her parents. Thankfully, they're very supportive, although her mother does have some questions and worries. I also liked how Sarah used social media to come out to her classmates. Of course, that could have gone completely in the opposite direction, but I'm glad it was a method that worked for her. It's not all sunshine and rainbows though. Not everyone is supportive of Rachel and Sarah being together, and I thought that was handled really well too.
Our Demented Play Date was just really sweet and fun. There's lots of geek jokes and lesbian puns, because that's just how Rachel is. Sarah doesn't always get the lesbian jokes right away, so it was cute seeing Rachel tease her about it. This was just an overall feel good read.
