Another Angelique Voisen story that I wish could have been longer.
"High Voltage" has a great concept with characters are a decent, but could have been amazing if there would have been a little more time to develop them. The story relatively simple, actually. Volt, an elemental whose power is control of electricity (Volt. Get it?). He and his friends, two other elementals, and their boss work together keeping things in line for a city that is overrun with all sorts of supernatural beasties. Heath is Volt's apprentice, and he's head over heels for him. It's obvious that Volt has feelings for Heath as well, but his past is keeping him from acting on it.
Some really awful stuff (no spoilers!) starts to go down, and Volt and Heath have to work together to destroy the evil that is chasing them.
Volt and Heath have a great...ahem...chemistry. Their feelings are deep, and even though the book is short, well developed. We get to see what goes on in both their brains and hearts as they find their way to each other. They need each other to be complete. Sure, Volt acts like a very hard man, but he's got a soft gooey center. Heath appears to be innocent and naive, but he's strong when he needs to be. Their sex, when it finally happens, is HAWT. Smoking, actually. It's BDSM, but it's not too hard core. Heath's first spanking was absolutely delicious. Wow.
Along with our main characters, we get Havoc (the leader of the group), Blaze, Levi, Gale, and Sarah. They all interact very well, and they're important to the story. They don't just take up space. The elementals get along like brothers, even though they're not blood. They have each other's backs in any and all situations. They can count on each other for anything. The evil...and I do mean evil...demon is scary and disturbing. I confess to being a little uncomfortable during his scenes, because it's so intense. There's action, suspense, and a bit of angst. Honestly, honestly, honestly, I wish that this could have been about 100 pages longer. I'd have liked to read more about Volt's childhood to see what got him to this point. I'd have liked to have more scenes between him and Heath, even though they're the center of the story, I wanted so much more. Also, I would have loved see more of Volt, Blaze, and Gale together.
I liked "High Voltage", but I'm positive I'd have LOVED it if I could have had MORE. I'll definitely be reading more of Angelique Voisen's books.
