I’m sensing a Cat Sebastian pattern: a good hook in the first act, then the third act feels rushed and falters. The mystery is obvious, but I don’t read for the mystery; the plot is thin, but I don’t rank plot > people; the resolution is swift, but I don’t give a damn as long as there is emotional payoff.

That’s what it lacked: the emotional payoff. Just because of the pacing.

But. But. I was exactly in the mood for this. Flaws be damned, I wanted a post-war cozy mystery between a charming spy and kind doctor; I wanted hot tea and mufflers and a duo that doesn’t need conflict to be great.

So this still gets four stars, because timing is everything. And I’d read it again. And if it’s the first of a series, maybe I’ll get that big payoff yet.
