Andy Weir’s Randomize is the sixth and final novella in the Forward Collection – a project created by six different authors. The entire idea of the project was to showcase a far-flung future, all written with the hopes of getting the reader (or listener) to think.
In a world of steadily advancing technology, Casinos are starting to have trouble staying ahead of the game. Babylon Casino has hired an IT whiz to upgrade their security, with the intent of using quantum computing to get the job done. But there’s a twist they haven’t anticipated yet, and they’re about to learn all about it.

“That does sound solid, but remember a system is only as secure as the humans who operate it.”

Randomize is Andy Weir’s contribute to the Forward Collection, and it’s honestly the reason I heard about this series to begin with. This is certainly the most mathematically inclined novella of the series, focused on quantum computers, random number generations, and entanglement.
It’s a fascinating read. It’s arguably the most down to earth novella in the series, and feels like it’s the closest to our timeline (for a lot of reasons). And yet it still makes us think. Or at least it certainly made me think.
This was not quite the novella I was expecting when I saw Andy Weir’s name attached to it. And yet I couldn’t help but be interested in the story being laid out in front of me. Part of me actually wishes that it was closer to a full-sized novel, just so I could get a chance to see a bit more about this plot.
As mentioned above, Randomize is part of a collection of novellas. I’ve already read the others, so I can safely say that they’re all quite different from one another. But they’re all worth the read – especially if you’re interested in some food for thought.
