Initial thoughts:Skylarks is a book with a main characters whose identities aren't portrayed often in YA fiction — lesbian, vegetarian and of low socioeconomic status. I liked reading about Joni's journey, how her identity impacted her world view and relationships with others. Her life was complicated for a myriad of reasons, and rather than offering easy answers, Skylarks faced them head-on. That being said, I thought I'd have been a little more affected while reading book but the prose wasn't all that emotional. If you prefer your books to not be tearjerkers but still want to read about neglected cross-sections of society, Skylarks will surely be up your alley!
