The Finish by Jade Eby packs an emotional punch. It is not an easy read. Domestic violence and the motivations of the abused are front and center for over 400 pages. It was hard not to scream at Tawny as I flipped the pages of The Finish while at the same time empathizing with her need to stay, her need to make things right, her need to fix him. We’ve all been in situations like that even if we have not been the victims of domestic violence. And that is what makes The Finish so assessable, so finish-able. There’s something in Tawny’s struggle to find herself amid all the hurt that is a reflection of the reader’s own experiences.
Do not doubt the warning on this book, “For mature audience only.” Jade holds nothing back as she moves through Tawny’s story. If you do start reading, be prepared for a roller coaster of emotions. I’m almost certain that you’ll be in need of some sunshine, unicorns and load of cotton candy when you are finished.
