Where We Belong

by Emily Giffin

Marian Caldwell is a television producer, living her dream in New York City. With a fulfilling career and relationship, she has convinced everyone, including herself, that her life is just as she wants it to be. But one night, Marian answers a knock on the door ...only to find Kirby Rose, an eighteen-year-old girl with a key to a past that Marian thought she had sealed off forever. From the moment Kirby appears on her doorstep, Marian's perfectly constructed world-and her very identity-will be shaken to its core, resurrecting memories of a passionate young love affair that threaten everything that has come to define her. For the precocious and determined Kirby, the encounter will force her to re-evaluate her family and future. As the two women embark on a journey to find the one thing missing in their lives, each will come to recognize that where we belong is often where we least expect to find ourselves-a place that we may have willed ourselves to forget, but that the heart remembers forever.

I've waited SO long to read Where We Belong, not that I can tell you why I waited so long. I've been a long time lover of Emily Giffin's writing, and although I haven't always loved every one of her books, I can appreciate what a talent she is.

Where We Belong is so different to Giffin's other reads - this one's all about adoption and what happens when your perfectly crafted life comes tumbling around your ears when the baby you gave up for adoption eighteen years ago comes a-knocking at your door, but it's chock-full of the typical Giffin emotions.

I really enjoyed getting to know Marian and Kirby in particular. They were both such well drawn characters and I loved that Where We Belong was about the positives of adoption - there was no blame game from Kirby's adoptive parents or from Kirby towards Marian; this was about seeing what the best thing was for Kirby, with no recriminations.

It was also AMAZING to see Claudia and Ben from Baby Proof! It was totally unexpected, and I think the first time Giffin's characters have re-appeared, it was a total blast from the past.

I really enjoyed Where We Belong, and I'm actually quite sad that I've now caught up with all of Giffin's books. She's a fabulous storyteller, and I can't wait for her next book to appear.
