The new Checkmate duet centered this time on Logan and Kayla two friends who have feelings for one another but due to circumstances beyond his control, Logan is afraid to take their friendship to the next level which leaves Kayla struggling to figure out why and what secrets is Logan hiding from her. The twist is Kayla has a few of her own.
Logan has been compartmentalizing his life for years, his job as a detective with the Sacramento PD, his daughter, his friends but most of all the PTSD he has lived with since returning home from Iraq. While he has feelings for Kayla he knows that he just doesn’t have the room to separate her from the rest of his life – nor does he really want to and that scares him. So he just does everything to stay away from her and then he kisses her and everything changes.
Kayla has been alone most of her life, her family is her friends, her volunteer work and most important her babies – her pups. She also has feelings for Logan but he keeps going hot and cold on her. The problem is that the kiss they shared knocks her out and she keeps finding herself in situations where she needs him and he keeps saving her. Then when things finally start to move in a positive direction, the unthinkable happens that could ruin everything.
What I love about Kennedy Fox is the balance of humor and tragedy within their stories and things aren’t always what they seem. They write great dialog between their characters that makes the relationships between her characters authentic and the pace are quick moving but doesn’t feel like as the reader anything is being missed. Of course, this is a Kennedy Fox romance so there is a lot of fun that does include donuts, Disney princes and lots of puppies all of which I loved. This is a duet so it does end on a major cliffhanger but the good news is the next books is a few short months away.
I highly recommend Checkmate: This is Dangerous it is a great summer read that is aligned with the previous books they duo has written.
