I listened to this book on audible and I was hooked from the opening pages. It takes me 20 minutes to get to work from my house, and I was hoping I could run into traffic or Operation Stack would be happening, so it took me longer. I hated rocking up to the car park and having to turn it off. Not only credit to the author but to the narrator she was fantastic!
We are introduced to David Kane first, he is a man’s man, en route to Black Rock Falls to take the role of the deputy sheriff. He is in hiding from his tragic past, sent into witness protection. Then bam he finds a police car overturned and a woman stuck inside. Well hello, Jenna Alton, the sheriff, what has happened to you!?
Alton too has a secret very much like Kane that needs hiding from the world, their past, names and prosthetic all changes to them and their characters. Neither knowing what is being hidden but both knowing that they are hiding something. To be fair not a lot of information is giving right away, and I feel there is a long way to go before we will learn everything, but I am excited to see where it goes, especially on revelation day! Straight away Kane is protective of her, and occasionally as much as I loved the macho man, I could feel Jenna’s frustration at being treated as the little lady.
I loved the slow chemistry growing between them and I cannot wait for the second book to see if this is progressed a bit further! Jenna relies more on Kane, and he lives on her property in his own little house, and after the initial awkwardness between them was comical, both marking their territories.
The opening chapter was horrific, showing us an initial insight into what was to come, where an unknown man is being tortured. However, the police turn up at the barn YAY! However, the cheer is short-lived, as they go away again. I was interested to see how this was would impact the story later and who it would affect. The story was a means to an end for the killer, steal, raping and pillaging innocent victims, setting up a fall guy and it was shocking when you discover who and why. The ending of this book was both intense and petrifying, would they be able to save the day in time, especially when such a taboo subject is involved. I found I held my breath waiting to find out – not good when you are driving!
Like most books, there is subplot running alongside, whilst we are on the road of discovery, and this one although wasn’t delved in to in too many details were just as awful, and I have a feeling (and I hope) it is addressed later in the series.
This was such a thrilling first book in the series, and I have a book hangover…. only 3 days until my audible credit resets and I can get book 2…Not that I am counting or anything.
