Normally, when I am listening to a story that I’ve previously read, I find that it enhances the story. In this case, the story was not enhanced, it surpassed my expectations and was by far the better experience of the two. While I originally gave the reading experience five stars, I knew that I was being a wee bit generous. The storyline was captivating, the characters were original, extremely sexual and fierce, but there were a few issues. The editing was completely distracting, it was repetitive and while Ryder’s bossiness could be sexy, it could also put him in the Douchewaffle category. I am thinking, the audio got a bit of a clean-up when it comes to the editing. Ryder is still a major Douchewaffle, but I have read the series and I know how he ends up.
Now a few readers might say that Fighting Destiny is very similar to a few other stories. For me, I could blame it on my shocking memory, but I think it’s more because if the story is captivating enough, I don’t care if it’s similar. I was captivated with this story and there were enough differences to make this an original.
Syn and Ryder’s chemistry is electric. There are times when Ryder, uses his Fae abilities to push Syn past her comfort zone. At times, this made me a wee bit cranky and made me dislike Ryder. But, if I was to look back at some of my very favourite heroes, I have disliked them at some point in the story. I guess I just love seeing the Douchewaffle become lovable.
While not the best narrators I have ever listened to, Sarah Puckett and Stephen Dexter do a pretty good job and brought Syn and Ryder to life. At first, I thought that Syn sounded a little too whiney, but as we go along, I realised that Syn was a little whiney. She is 21 after all. Ryder’s character is dominating, bossy and arrogant and the narrator portrayed those traits. I will be keen to listen to these narrators again in the future.
I will not be changing my rating from 5 stars. I was thoroughly entertained, desperate to keep listening and sad when it came to the end. I couldn’t have asked for more and my only disappointment is that #2 Taunting Destiny, is not available to listen to.
