This book is the introduction to a series of authoritative accounts of the methods of converting solar energy to chemical fuels or electric power by means of photoconversion devices -- that is, by direct, non-thermal means. Photoconverters include devices as diverse as phytoplankton and photovoltaic cells. Despite their differences, these are based on common principles -- photon absorption, generation of excited states, separation of hole-electron pairs or their daughter products, and avoiding recombination processes in favour of work production.
