I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I was so glad to see Charlotte back in this book! Penny played a larger role than in the first book as well. Simon and Kate are starting to ease into an actual relationship, though that thread was super minor.
There was lots of action and magic, as well as violence and gore, and things turned a bit darker in this story. We got to see lots more of Penny's nifty mechanical gizmos, and Malcolm grew a lot as a character. I really liked Kate in this, and Simon is still just as funny and quick-witted.
We finally get to know more about the key, and a bit of what it does. We also find out more about the connection between Simon and Kate's fathers. There are new monsters to fight, as well as new evils.
This book is just as fully rendered as the last one. You feel completely immersed both in the characters, and the world they live in. Everything fits together, and nothing feels like it was just thrown in.
With magic, Egyptian Gods, necromancers, zombies, mystery, and lots of historical touches, if you haven't read the first book in this series yet, you need to do so!
