Summary:

Fire has always been a thing of nightmares for many. In this world, people are at risk of spontaneously combusting and turning into Infernals. An Infernal wants only one thing - to destroy. They are no longer considered human. That is where the Fire Force comes into play. It's their duty to protect the people.

Shinra has gone undercover, hoping to discover the truth behind the infernal bugs. And it just so happens that he will end up in the right place at the right time. But how far does this mystery go?

Review:

I will start this review by saying that I am extremely torn here. On the one hand, the infernal mystery is captivating. On the other hand, there are elements of Fire Force Vol. 4 that made me want to scream – and not in a good way.

Let's start with the good: the whole corruption with the other Companies is pretty interesting. Likewise, it was fascinating to get a chance to see how different fire abilities work, as certain characters have gone highly specialized. It reminded me a lot of Soul Eater and is a strong reminder of these two series' connection.

Now, let's get into the frustrating part of this volume. I don't like how Tamaki Kotatsu was treated in this volume. She's the obligatory fan-service character; I get it. But there's a time and a place for that, and during a dramatic fight, is not it. Her involvement/treatment during that fight felt out of place and even out of character (she's a fighter, yet she stands frozen for most of the battle, all while showing off her fan-service glory. Ugh). I don't want to harp on this too much, but it bothered me and ruined my connection to the moment.

Fire Force Vol. 4 was an interesting volume overlooking that major complaint. I'm still eager to read through the rest of this series for various reasons.
