Douglas Hofstadter's book is concerned directly with the nature of maps" or links between formal systems. However, according to Hofstadter, the formal system that underlies all mental activity transcends the system that supports it. If life can grow out of the formal chemical substrate of the cell, if consciousness can emerge out of a formal system of firing neurons, then so too will computers attain human intelligence. Goedel, Escher, Bach is a wonderful exploration of fascinating ideas at the heart of cognitive science: meaning, reduction, recursion, and much more.

Imponente. Por su calidad, pero también por el esfuerzo que requiere para leerlo. Ya desde la portada, que empieza con el primer juego de palabras y visual:

Godel Escher Bach (G E B)--> si suponemos que son tres hilos de una trenza, ¿a dónde movemos qué hilo?
Eternal Golden Braid (E G B) --> ahí tenemos el movimiento de las hebras para hacer una trenza (braid).


Los capítulos tienden a empezar con conceptos de programación, autorreferencia (de aquí el Gödel), más lógica simbólica que programación incluso, y luego se expanden hasta abarcar la pintura (de ahí el Escher) y la música (de ahí el Bach), aunque hay muchos más artistas mencionados en el libro de manera recurrente.

Es difícil a veces tener en mente a dónde nos quiere llevar el autor, pero el viaje que nos proporciona es excitante y muy, muy lleno de información, propuestas y conceptos. Complejo y exquisito.
