Cocktails and Books

It's been a while since I've read a Caroline Linden book, so I was really looking forward to this story. Unfortunately, SIX DEGREES OF SCANDAL fell a little short for me.
Olivia Townsend is on the run, hiding from a man who is determined she give him what her late husband owes him. He'd already threatened her best friend, so Olivia runs hoping she can find whatever it was her husband was up to and somehow save herself. But what she thought was going to be a solo effort changes when the man she thought she would spend the rest of her life with comes to her aide.
I liked Olivia and James, but I never really fell in love with them. I didn't like how Jamie arrogantly left Olivia to face their families when her parents were determined to marry her off. And I couldn't understand why Olivia didn't fight harder or even run away, instead of finding herself tied to a man she didn't like. It wasn't hard to figure out, from things said in the story, that Olivia wasn't the favored daughter and her parents basically sold her to the highest bidder. I would have run if I knew that (which she did) and wanted Olivia to do the same.
Jamie was better as an adult. He basically couldn't commit to another woman because they weren't Olivia. And as soon as he learned she was in trouble, he came running to her rescue. But I think I was tainted towards him based on what he had done when he was younger.
The mystery about what Olivia's husband had been doing was interesting, which kept me intrigued enough to keep turning the page.
This was a good read, just not one of my favorites by this author.
