I read this book when it first debuted years ago. It's a story I turn to when I am looking for a good, quality read. This adult fantasy romance stands out because of its amazing characters. The plot is fairly predictable, particularly if you are an avid Roberts' reader. While Nell is not my favorite character Roberts' has ever written, I do find her to be one of the most well-rounded. I absolutely adore watching Nell grow not only her self-confidence, but also her business as a cook. Honestly, I love the cooking aspect so much. Every time Nell makes a dish, it's like I am in the kitchen with her.
The romance between Nell and Zack is very sweet, but not particularly steamy. Mia would occasionally get on my nerves in regards to her instruction of Nell on witchcraft – superiority is a pet peeve of mine. I loved the growing friendship between Nell, Mia, and Ripley. I always appreciate how much Roberts' crafts the bonds of friendship between women just as much as the bonds between the romantic leads. The antagonist of the story was very one dimensional, a problem with most of the villains in her stories.
tl;dr A quality romance with a predictable plot, but outstanding characters.
