In this book the situation in five countries, the UK, US, Japan, China, and the Soviet Union, is considered in detail. These countries are chosen for the range of conditions and economic circumstances which they represent as well as their diverse energy balances and importance in global energy terms. For each country, the study presents an overview of current energy balances and associated GHG emissions: official and (where available) other supply and demand projections: and primary energy resources. From this basis the potential for reducing GHG emissions is discussed, together with the practical prospects and costs entailed in trying to meet specific reduction targets.
