This book had me feeling a lot...happiness, sadness, disappointment, devastation and love.
Nico was brought up by loving parents who taught him to pay it forward. When he was older his way was to tattoo women who had been broken. These women who he calls his birds have been abused, devastated or lived through an emotional time. He would hear their stories, mark their triumphant of living through it and hopefully help them to move on. It is a lovely thing to do, but unfortunately those marks on the women left him with a burden too.
In trying to live with his burden Nico resorts to escapism in the form of alcohol and emotionless sex. Unfortunately this doesn't necessarily fix the problem and one night things go horribly wrong. Cue the wake up call....
Lark has lived through tragedy and had her heart broken. When this couple meet there is an instant attraction. They become friends and help each other.
I loved this couple together. They had a lot of issues to overcome but luckily they had each other and a great support network of friends and family.
There were parts to this story that I didn't particularly like reading, especially Nico's sexcapades. It felt dirty and wrong, but I knew where he was coming from. I felt drained with how many times Nico had to live through another trauma.
As per usual Ms Hartnett has provided us with an emotional rollercoaster that left me with feelings I will be contemplating for a while and I will definitely be reading more of her work.
