This is the first book in a trilogy, set in Glasgow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kirsty runs away from her foster home with childhood sweetheart Craig. They move into a one-room flat full of hope, which dies when Craig turns out to be a less-than-ideal husband and starts to work for a villain.
