Over the last decade, the volume of literature on the Final Solution has burgeoned. At the same time the history of the Nazi persecution of the Jews, Gypsies, blacks and homosexuals is being taught more widely than ever in sixth-forms and universities. Although a relatively new field, the study of the Holocaust has already given rise to a series of intense debates that are central to understanding modern German history, the course of the Nazi state and Jewish history. These debates have profound implications for historical studies, political argument and moral philosophy. This short book will survey the historiography of the Final Solution, drawing on recent monographs published in Europe, Israel and America. It will outline and analyse the central controversies and suggest some of their ramifications for use in discussion.
