The aim of the MIME Project, is to produce units, comprising programs and backing documentation on mathematics topics varying from school levels to second year engineering undergraduate standard. This unit deals with the effects of friction. After studying the main features of the friction force the concept of angle of friction is introduced; the problem of a block on an inclined plane is used to illustrate the usefulness of the concept. Further items considered are those of whether a block will slide before toppling over, the behaviour of loaded and unloaded ladders, and applications of the theory to the friction of belts and wedges. This self-paced study pack is suitable for use either by a teacher with his class or by the pupil for guided discovery. The unit consists of two program disks and two back up disks running on the BBC/B microcomputer. It is fully supported by Teacher's notes and includes comprehensive work cards for the students.
