Part of an encyclopaedic reference on inorganic and organometallic chemistry, this present volume continues a series on acyclic sulfur-nitrogen compounds with sulfur of oxidation number IV. The description of sulfur-nitrogen compounds with 2-co-ordinate sulfur is continued with the sulfur diimides and sulfur diimide anions, their transition metal complexes, and radicals, cations and radical anions derived from sulfur diimides. The examination of sulfur diimides begins with the parent compound HN=S=NH, and the sulfur diimide anion [N=S=N]2-, whose potassium salt can act as a starting compound for the preparation of acyclic and cyclic sulfur diimides and their transition metal complexes. The following sections of the text deal with sulfur diimides bearing substituents at the nitrogen atoms which involve elements of the main groups VII to VIII. There are numerous examples of symmetrically and unsymmetrically N,N'-disubstituted sulfur diimides. The volume concludes with a detailed description of the class of N,N'-diorganyl-sulfur diimides, RN=S=NR'. The main importance of these compounds is their function as intermediates for organic synthesis.
