Duke of Midnight is probably my second favorite of the series thus far. I loved Artemis and Maximus, both separately and as a couple. I became fully invested in the suspense plot, and that final page left me dying to know more! Of course, it also helped that Maximus' version of the Ghost of St. Giles reminded me a lot of Batman. He witnesses his parents' murder as a teenager, and from there he started training to fight back and avenge them. He's finally tracks down the man who murdered them after nearly twenty years. At least, he thought he did until he also tracked down the final emerald from his mother's necklace.
The romance portion of Duke of Midnight was sexy and heartbreaking! Artemis is her cousin Penelope's lady's companion and doesn't expect to ever get married. Maximus is looking for the perfect bride to help him rule his dukedom. That happens to be Penelope, even if he can't image himself ever conversing with her. Obviously, nothing happens with Penelope because Artemis is all that he can think about. Not just because she knows his darkest secret and tried to blackmail him with it. Their scenes together are all jam packed with tension and emotion! I almost cried at one point!
Duke of Midnight was a really great addition to this series. It has a similar dark tone to Wicked Intentions which I really enjoyed. We also got to know several more of the residents quite well. I found myself eager to get to their books. I am hoping there's at least one more Ghost of St. Giles...
