The aim of the MIME Project is to produce units comprising programs and backing documentation on mathematics topics varying from school levels to second year engineering undergraduate standard. This unit is concerned mainly with problems where a rigid body is at rest under the action of several coplanar forces. Several types of force are considered and the turning effect of a force is examined. The free body diagram method is explained via examples. Methods of solving problems which may involve more than three forces are presented (using a polygon of forces and resolving in two non-parallel directions) and applied to three practical situations. Then the special case of three-force systems is dealt with, again via practical examples: the methods of triangle of forces, Lami's theorem and resolving in two non-parallel directions. Systems of parallel forces are treated separately, including the equivalence between a force-couple system and a single resultant force.
