The aim of the MIME Project is to produce units comprising programs and backing documentation on mathematics topics varying from school levels to second year engineering undergraduate standard. This unit is concerned with the algebra of vector quantities and their application in mechanics. The idea of a vector is an important one in mathematics in general and in mechanics in particular where a range of physical phenomena - which includes forces and velocities - can be represented most naturally by vector expressions. In the unit we consider only the most basic properties of vector models. The concept of a vector is introduced via vector displacements leading to addition, subtraction and equality of such vectors before introducing, through practical examples, the same concepts for forces and velocity vectors. The unit then explores the ideas of components, resultants and the representation in terms of unit vectors of given vectors in two and three dimensions. The scalar and vector products of two vectors are introduced, some applications being given in geometry.
