The aim of the MIME Project is to produce units comprising programs and backing documentation on mathematics topics varying from school levels to second year engineering undergraduate standard. This unit is concerned with the measurement of angular motion. First circular measure is introduced. Then graphical methods are used to introduce angular velocity and angular acceleration; the limiting process is used to demonstrate clearly their instantaneous values. The links between linear and angular motion are established and applied to gears and belts; the principles of the gearbox are clearly demonstrated. The equations of motion for angular motion with constant acceleration are obtained and shown to be analogous to those for linear motion with constant acceleration. The equations of motion for both linear and angular motion are utilized to analyse the motion of a wheel and axle with attached masses in a final interactive example.
