I pretty much hated the first 30% or so. It just irritated me. They fell in love instantly more or less and she was kind of childish and I don't know - something about it all rubbed me the wrong way. But once the novel got going, it was pretty good. I enjoyed the dialogue between Harriet and Gideon and most of the later events amused me. By the end, I found myself quite enjoying the story.

This was quite a fun read, Harriet Pomeroy is 25 years-old, her father is dead but she and her sister with their companions live in the Rectory. She is annoyed when what appears to be smugglers or thieves invade her fossil-hunting space and she summons the lord of the manor, Gideon Westbrook, Viscount St Justin to her aid. Gideon is scarred both physically and mentally but she finds herself attracted to him.

When they deal with the gang invading her territory she can't help but get involved which leads her to be compromised as the two of them end up spending the night together. Gideon goes against his image and offers his hand in marriage and the relationship develops from there.

While occasionally Harriet is a bit too innocent she does come across as the obsessed scientist, and fairly realistically. Gideon comes across as a man with a major chip on his shoulder and when the two of them come together some of their flaws really work together to make quite a good relationship and story.
