i've owned this book for at least 7 years, and in those 7 years i've read it zero times. until now.

i *finally* decided to give it a shot, especially since Cinda is a fantasy queen and because i own two more of the books in this series (for some reason).

really boring. i didn't feel any tension. people had powers but you didn't see a lot of it, or it wasn't really described in any detail. just felt very "vague-fantasy."

giving away the rest of these books, not interested in reading any more of them.

They fought because they loved the dance, and the weight of a sword in their hands. The clash and spark of metal and hiss of flame was like music written just for them. They fought foor glory, but not for blood.

It took me too long to get into this one. I'm a studious lover of rich histories and backstories but this one took far too long to start. It felt like the book was trying to do too many things at once. From a cute high school romance to deep fantasy lore to being a period piece.

BUT

I enjoyed it. I still enjoyed it! The second half of the book was good. So much so that I was willing to overlook the flaws in the first half and raise my rating by a half star.

Jack lead a life filled with ordinary, granted there were bullies who picked on him in school but they were pretty ordinary. His life changes when he forgets to take his daily medicine and suddenly he's stronger and faster. But he nearly kills someone and it's the start of an adventure.

He's actually a member of the Weirlind, an underground society of people with magical powers. He's a warrior, one of the few left and the wizards want him dead or fighting for them. He just wants to live.

I did like the story and the characters, they're interesting and the interweaving of magical and mundane is quite a lot of fun and his friends stand by him well. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

This is the sort of book you hope young adult fiction will be. It's really well paced and interesting, engaging characters where even the secondary and tertiary characters matter. But I think the thing that impressed me most was how it wasn't shallow.

From the very beginning there was a web of different characters that you immediately cared about. There was substance in their history and a whole mythology that was really unique and intriguing. I loved the world she built and the details and history in it. Actually I loved the history embedded in the whole thing.

In some ways, reading this felt like reading [b:I Am Number Four|7747374|I Am Number Four (Lorien Legacies, #1)|Pittacus Lore|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1305807140l/7747374._SY75_.jpg|10576999] with the vague similarities of a young boy with powers he's just discovering who is being hunted. But this was so much better. This was what you wanted I Am Number Four to be.

Update: This was even better the second time around. I didn't find it slow at all.

This was a pretty good YA story. It wasn't complicated and it was an easy read. The first half of the story was a little slow going, but things really picked up during the second half. I thought Jack was a likable character. He was thrown into his situation unaware of his magical abilities, but he did a great job handling it. He showed signs of maturity without becoming a brat, which was refreshing. I'm looking forward to the next book.
