Over the years, in both research and practice, the authors addressed issues relating to young offenders and their drinking. The knowledge and experience they have gained forms the basis of this book. The format in which the book is presented owes much to the training courses they have prepared for staff from a variety of disciplines: probation officers, prison officers, prison psychologists, nurses, residential care staff, social workers and alcohol counsellors. It is for professionals such as these that the book is intended. The text provides the background, evidence and methodology for conducting interventions with young offenders to reduce both their drinking and drink-related crime. These interventions may be used both in secure settings and in the community, and are appropriate for both young men and women. The age range of the offender population to whom the interventions apply is probably wider than that suggested by legal definitions of a "young" offender, particularly at the older end of the continuum. Professionals can consider using this book to guide their work with offenders who are in their 20s or 30s.
