Night time is the right time...

This book didn't do much for me. I was not a fan of the way that Hawk talked to Gwen. I was not a fan of the way he talked period. I also wasn't a fan of Gwen being extra one minute and then sweetly in love the next. The writing style was all over the place and yeah, I think I'm just going to stick to the Chaos books. I did love all of the side characters though. Hawk's family, his parents especially and Gwen's family (except her dumbass sister) and then Elvira, Mitch and everyone else...they were all great.

Mystery Man is classic KA! Very, very alpha male, lots of humour, love, suspense and squishy heart on my part...
Story:
There is so much going on in Mystery Man, some of it good, some of it bad, some of it ugly - all of it pretty amazing. Once I got over Hawk's bossiness and Gwen's waffling, I fell in love with them both. And as always, Ashley brought out the big guns when it comes to turns of phrases that made my heart turn over!
Gwen's sister was so much trouble, and she didn't seem to care that she put her family in danger with her antics. Good thing that Gwen was on a lot of hot, alpha-men's radar. And they were willing and ready to bend over backwards to keep her safe. Which led to some stand-offs that had me laughing really hard.
Characters:
Gwen is a whimsical book editor, she daydreams about love with a capital L, which is why some of her decisions might be poor. However, she totally brings her A-game when she needs to.
Cabe 'Hawk' is a bossy alpha man, and while I wanted to throttle him at times, he was also incredibly sweet. And hot. And cuddly.
Gwen's cosmo friends and Hawk's commando, as well as some well known characters from both the Chaos series and the Rock Chick series showed up, and I was in heaven.
Writing style :
First person past tense worked very well for Mystery Man, and most of the story is from Gwen's point of view. There are a lot of dialogues, too, though, as well as some scenes that I felt like I saw from afar.
Feels :
*sighs* There were definitely feels. I was mad at Hawk for parts of the books, even when I kind of understood him. I did love him, though. Gwen also frustrated me a little at times, because she acted a bit clueless about certain things. Most of all, though, I felt both the suspense and the love. And I thoroughly enjoyed the friendships between the various characters, as well as the strong relationship Gwen had with her parents.
And I had a house I was fixing up. Therefore, I needed to get paid. Okay, that wasn't strictly true. I wasn't fixing up my house. My dad did some of the work. My friend Troy did the rest. So I should say that I had a house I was guilting, begging and emotionally blackmailing others into fixing up.
His grin got bigger. Then he let me go but slid my purse off my arm and before I could make a peep, he dug into it. I decided to let him have at it. He'd already touched me and I wasn't certain I wanted that to happen again. I wasn't certain what my response would be but I was certain that jumping his bones was high up on the list of possibles.
I glared up at him. He smiled down at me, with dimples. Shit, I liked those dimples. Time to get to work.

I honestly could not get into this idea of a "mystery man" consistently entering Gwen's house, having sex with her, and disappearing. I just couldn't do it. Even when she gives us the whole story about how she met him, I was still disturbed by this set up. It also didn't help that I simply didn't like Hawk. Gwen has some issues with him at first as well, but she still finds him incredibly sexy. He's a bully. And he BREAKS INTO HER HOUSE. And he has her investigated and watched and is generally invasive. But it's part of his job, so it's suppose to be okay. Except he didn't do all of that for his job, so it's stalking. Oh, and there's one scene where she is physically trying to fight him off, but he has sex with her anyway. How about no.
As for the plot, Mystery Man drags on for way too long. Gwen is under protection once whoever is after her sister comes after her. She's kidnapped a few times, and is rescued within three pages. So why is this book nearly 500 pages?! All of the action comes in bursts, and then there's a million pages of people just sitting around talking and eating. There's not even good, lengthy food descriptions. Same goes for the sex. We basically get the trailer version of every single sex scene. Yawn. So again, why is this 500 pages?! There's even a 4 month time jump after they find Gwen's sister! Why?!
I just can't even with Mystery Man. It's super long for a Romantic Suspense, especially since there's so much filler. The hero was irritating as heck. In fact, even from the first chapter, I was hoping Gwen would hook up with Tack. He's not exactly an angel, but he treated her a heck of a lot better than Hawk did. So does Lawson, the cop who responded to a break in at her home in the beginning. Basically, I wanted her to end up with anyone but the hero!

Some of the issues with Hawk were kind of left hanging-I would have liked more explanation about why there were so many rumors about the women he slept with. Obviously, if the whole city of Denver had heard them, there had to be some reasoning behind it. I just felt like it was a bit too glossed over.
I am so glad Gwen was beating herself up about letting Hawk into her bed. Having the ability to hear her thoughts made the whole situation more believable because she was thinking what I probably would have been thinking.
Overall, I think I liked more parts than I didn't. 4 stars

There are so many things that annoy me with this book, Gwen's an idiot, Hawk is a douche, but it is still one of my favorite books and I re-read it often...
Re-Read April 2017. My above sentiments are the same. Such a ridiculous book but I still love every minute of it!
