In this book, the reader meets Dave, a firefighter from Barry in South Wales. Every day, Dave and the other firefighters check the fire engines and practise using the fire and rescue equipment. The reader finds out about the different types of fire engine, how foam and water are used to put out fires and what happens when firefighters have to enter a smoke-filled building. The authors also explain what a fire hydrant is and how the firefighters use it. Dave and the firefighters visit a school and talk to the children about fire prevention and the work of the fire and rescue service. When they return to the fire station, there is an emergency call; the reader discovers what happens when the firefighters are called out to tackle a real fire.
