Pere Armand David became known for his remarkable scientific reports and discoveries of birds, mammals and plants in China during the latter half of the 19th century. Best-known for his discovery of Pere David's deer and the giant panda, Pere David was also an intrepid traveller, and made three major trips between 1862 and 1874 through Imperial China, Inner Mongolia and Tibet, faithfully recording his findings and adventures. The book is illustrated with period engravings and photographs, with a colour section of some of the species first discovered by Pere David.
