Every time I hear of another Reinhart release I’m happy but bitter it’s not a Cherry Tucker Mystery. That’s going to change now that Fin is on the scene.
First sentence: Wednesdays often brought the college boys to Jello’s Pool Hall.
Immediately engaging. Kept me guessing. Solid group of characters that so far are segregated like Atlanta. Lots of surprises. Fin is a wildcard with a wonky moral compass trying to do right. Lex is a mysterious dreamboat. Mark is a pleasant surprise. Pity we didn’t get to meet living Penny. Hope to watch the crew grow and see who they help next.
The only things I didn’t like: was how Jello was described. It was really fatphobic and uncomfortable.
And I don’t know what to make of Dot. At first she was just a weird Sapphire type to me. But we learn more later and it’s not her but Fin that’s changed. Well, I can’t spoil it and I’m white so grain of salt. But hopeful. Intrigued.
The Cupid Caper is Hustle with Gin from Elemental Assassin minus the magic.
If that doesn’t want to make you read it, I don’t know else to tell you.
five-stars
If you’re curious about Reinhart’s other work, here’s my review for the first Cherry Tucker book, a spoiler free review of the 6th book here and for a different speed, there’s also her Maizie Albright series.
QUOTES:
Particularly since my father was a cop. And more crooked than any swindler I’d ever met.
Still too hard to trust him. And too hard not to love him.
