In ten research articles, this special issue reports results obtained by researchers of the German research network ‘BiotechGenoMik’. The complete genome sequence of a number of microorganisms was determined at the Göttingen Genomics Laboratory and these sequences served as the basis of applied research on the organisms 'Ralstonia eutropha, Gluconobacter oxydans, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Bacillus licheniformis'. Furthermore, the topic includes novel biocatalysts which were discovered by studying the thermoalkaliphilic organism 'Anaerobranca gottschalkii' and metagenomes of various sources. This volume is of special interest for microbiologists and biotechnologists working in academia and industry. It points out that exciting results in the field of Biotech Genomics can be obtained when researchers in the areas of genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics co-operate closely.
