At sixty-three years old, Maxie McNabb isn't sure that leaving everything behind for a life on the road is the best move. But once she begins cruising down the Alaska Highway in her Winnebago with her mini-dachshund, Stretch, at her side and the open road ahead she has no doubt she's done the right thing. However, before her exploration of the Lower Forty-eight gets under way, Maxie is called to the bedside of her old friend Sarah Nunamaker. Terminally ill, Sarah makes it clear she has a secret she needs to reveal to Maxie in person. But when Maxie arrives she finds her friend in hospital, barely conscious, and Sarah's home broken into. While the police have no leads, Maxie is convinced it has something to do with Sarah's delusionary ramblings.
