Finally, Katie gets her story told. After seeing her struggle with keeping the Blackwell ranch afloat in the past four books of the series, we now get to see more of what has been going on. The pressure she has been under to hide her father’s secret and to keep that “other” secret is almost too much.

Chance finally returns, albeit very reluctantly, to Montana with his adorable daughter. He was so fun because despite appearing to be the very typical cowboy, it ends up that he is scared to sit on a horse. A fact that ends up making for a very gallant act on his part.

As a songwriter, Chance has come up empty since his wife died. It was humorous how throughout this story, all those around him kept saying things that he knew would make great lyrics so he would be scribbling them down. That theme of him needing to find his song again was a sweet one.

Rosie captures my heart in the way well-written children will. It was so fun seeing her tough father melt at her requests and dress her in all the pink her little heart desired. Probably the funniest scene in the book was when, at Jon’s ranch for dinner, Rosie talked about naming the cows. As the adults tried to explain to her why that was a bad idea, things went from bad to worse!

The story was well written and the tension relating to the secrets was just right. Add a missing father, an accident in the rain and secrets coming to light at just the wrong time and you have an enjoyable read.

I couldn’t help but notice how the author kept going back and forth about whether Jon and Lydia were married. At one point in the story they were planning the wedding and enlisting help. Then they were married with the twins calling her “mom”, and then the wedding was being planned again. I also felt the resolution of the situation with Big E was anti-climactic after the build-up through the other books.

Will Chance agree to keep the ranch or sell it?

The end of The Blackwell Brother’s Return is here with The Rancher’s Homecoming by Anna J. Stewart. This last book is about the fifth Blackwell brother, Chance Blackwell, and their ranch hand Katie Montgomery. Chance Blackwell is the deciding vote to keep the ranch or to sell it. He doesn't have time for the ranch as he is a famous singer who is trying to make a comeback. Katie Montgomery just wants to be able to work and live at the only place she has called home.

Chance Blackwell

The main male character is Chance Blackwell. He is the youngest of all the Blackwell siblings. Chance is also the only sibling that doesn’t like ranching and hasn’t been back home in over ten years. He is a father to a beautiful little girl, Rosie and a widow. His wife died almost two years ago.

What I like

I like that Chance took his little girl to meet both sides of the family all along knowing that he doesn’t belong on the ranch. He is also a great dad which I adored. He has a great connection to Rosie and been her sole world since his wife passed. Another thing that I like about Chance is that despite everything in him telling him to leave the ranch, he is still there trying to make it work.

What I dislike

What I dislike about Chance is that he knows how stubborn the Montgomery family could be and yet he didn’t wait to hear Katie's side of the story. The last thing that I don’t like about Chance is that he didn’t want his daughter to get attached to the ranch or her family. He never thought he would fall in love with the place that he tried so hard to leave.

Katie Montgomery

The main female character is Katie Montgomery, and she has a lot of explaining to do. Katie has been since the beginning, but we learn a lot about her in this book. All Katie has ever wanted to be is the foreman of the Blackwell Ranch and to be there for her dad. She also wanted to meet Rosie in person. The only thing stopping her from getting everything is the fact that Big E has left. Or has he really taken off?

Likes and Dislikes

What I like about Katie is that she is the one constant thing in all the books. She is the primary person running the ranch while Big E has run off to do whatever he is doing. However, Katie was the one that has kept the ranch running even with Big E was there. What I don’t like about Katie is that she didn’t tell Chance sooner about Big E's scheme.

Five Star

I am giving The Rancher’s Homecoming by Anna J. Stewart a five-star rating. She did a fabulous job of wrapping up this little series. Chance and Katie are perfect for each other and make a terrific team parenting Rosie.
