The fourth edition of Geography: Regions and Concepts retains the overall structure of its predecessors, but it introduces substantial revisions and additions in the text and cartography. Among the major changes are the following: a complete reorganization and rewriting of chapter 3 on North America; the addition of a systematic essay for each regional chapter to provide expanded coverage of topical human and physical geography; the introduction of five model boxes to explore more fully the use of some familiar models in geography; an expanded emphasis on urbanization throughout, beginning with a new section in the opening chapter, and the appearance of several boxes to cover new concerns in geography (eg acid rain, remote sensing technology and employment opportunities) as well as places that have become increasingly important on the world scene in the 1980s (eg Central America's spreading conflicts, the Falklands Islands issue and the territorialization of Antarctica).
