Maisy Norgate’s position as an art teacher was eliminated so she’s working at the local coffee shop. She never expected to receive a bequest from an uncle she never knew existed. Once she is given an intricately designed key, she is even more confused about the motives behind it.
Nephilim Rhys Boyce, along with his Nephilim best friends Gideon and Zavier, is sent to protect the new Keeper of the Key to the gates of Hell. He’s even more confused when she has no idea of her new position and has given the key away. Maisy quickly gets a reality check when she and her friend are attacked by a demon. Rhys comes to help save the day and is pleasantly surprised by the friends reaction to the terrifying creature. Once Maisy comes around to the idea of being the new Keeper of the Key, it becomes a race to find the key before her two week transition period ends. If she doesn’t have the key back by then, things will get complicated.
This is the first book I’ve read by Christi Barth. The world she’s built around Maisy and Rhys is fantastic. While on an adrenaline fueled race to find the key, battling demons, and passing tests, Rhys can’t help but fall for the optimistic ray of sunshine that is Maisy. I love how Barth takes the half-human/half-angel characters and shows them as not fully good or bad. My previous notions about Nephilim are history. I only want to read about them if they are like this trio of sexier than Hell best friends.
This book is one rush after another. Whether Rhys and Maisy are delving into the spicy side of life or battling demons, the story is always interesting. I would love to read more about this world in the future and learn what else is in store for these dynamic characters.
