What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales?
When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius--his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse.Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through? Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue proves: true love isn't always diplomatic.
I took this with me wherever I went and stole every second I had to read! Absorbing, hilarious, tender, sexy--this book had everything I crave. You guys, I was a mess while reading this lol
First of all, ever read a book featuring an alternate history and thought; 'damn, THIS is the history I wish we'd gotten!'. Well, this is that book my friends. I low key feel cheated that this isn't real. I'm clearly on the wrong timeline here.
I also loved how fluffy and hopeful this book was, while also having some hard-hitting moments of real struggle. Like, yes, life can be beautiful, but it can also be shit af. Not going to lie. I teared up and cried at some moments, just because I felt these characters so deeply.
Alex and Henry are, like, my babies. Honestly loved them so much, which is funny because at first-- I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about Alex. He seemed pretty judgmental and I wasn't sure how I felt about that, except then he met Henry and they interacted and I hugged my kindle to my chest and whispered 'I have chosen you'. Don't look too deep into that.
Anyway, I think McQuiston did a great job letting us see the real Alex, and why his reactions were what they were at first, and the banter was A+++++.
The family & friendship depicted in this book were delicious as well. So messy, but so full of love and genuine care and GAH. so good.
I debated whether I'd give it 4 or 5 because I usually give 5 to the books that kind of change something in me as I read. But how can I give this any less, when the only bad thing I have to say is that I want more? When it made me wish it was a reality instead of fiction?
Anyways, that's it for this messy whatever. 2020 is starting strong for me and I am living for it!

31 December 2019: I was wrong, it's not snooze-worthy politics, not on the whole anyway, I simply don't understand the intricacies of American politics. All the same, I loved rereading this with William and I can't wait to see what Casey has in store for us next!
19 June 2019: Very enjoyable. Some instances of snooze-worthy politics but that can be overlooked. Didn't really take notes for this one but great characterisation, plot progression and writing style!

Red, White & Royal Blue is the book I've been waiting for, and while C.S. Pacat came close with Captive Prince, Red, White & Royal Blue is more tasteful to it's readers sensibilities. I look forward to seeing what Casey McQuiston has in store for us next.

Of course this is way too short to give the ook the credit it deserves, but I just finished it and have to let it sink in for a while longer.
I think the author wrote a wonderful book against the backdrop of the horrible current president of the USA and what would be a way better situation. I would certainly be a big fan of Alex and Henry 3 :)

What I liked:
The sense of humor in the book. It definitely made me laugh out loud from time to time.
The chemistry between Alex and Henry. They were so sweet together, and it was clear from page one, that they were meant to be.
What I didn't like:
The writing style. It felt stiff to me.
It didn't feel like much happened. I mean, their problems were easy to figure out, I think. It wasn't a big deal. It was both over the top and not enough.
The "I'm just ignoring you for no reason" thing was just childish.
