I finished Gypsy Freak in one day and I can thank the Energy company for helping me out with that. Yes, it sucked me in and had me rushing to find out what would happen next, but, when you have no power for a couple of hours, what else to do, but read. Ok, I probably SHOULD have taken the kids on an adventure, but I was also using it as a bit of a test. I wanted to prove to my kids that they COULD(!!!) survive without WiFi, Xbox and the TV. All around, it was a very successful day and they did SURVIVE!!
Holy Shamoly!! Gypsy Freak sure did pack a punch. We're definitely getting a bit of that reverse harem action in this one. No, it's not a big orgy like I originally pictured but Violet is getting up close and personal with each of the monsters. It's a funny one because I'm not at all uncomfortable with the way it's all playing out. I'm normally the first one running for the hills at the first sign of cheating, but it's not at all like that. I guess you would have to read it to get what I mean.
I was pretty surprised how this one played out, to be honest. Violet is such a complicated character and with each revelation, I found myself wondering what more could she handle. There's this innocence she carries around because of her lack of knowledge and understanding of the monsters and this place she now calls home. The secret that Violet tries to hide from the monsters is one step closer to being exposed and I'm not confident their reactions will be positive. Violet has lost a lot of her loved ones and each additional one seems to leave her further damaged. Her absent father seems to be a bit of a waste of space when it comes to parenting.
I'm pretty stoked that Kristy Cunning is not making us wait long between instalments. 3 weeks isn't a long wait and I'm fairly confident this storyline will be fresh in my mind when I get to #3.
I don't know how to explain Gypsy Freak and do it justice. It's humorous, a little weird and decidedly different from other books I've read in this genre. I was entertained from start to finish and my emotions took a somewhat bumpy ride. These monsters definitely do go bump in the night.
I'm definitely going back for more.
