The Masked Maiden was a lot darker than the first book. I did miss some of the humor between Sam and Aria, but I still enjoyed the more serious turn. We learn a lot more about Aria's past as a Peace Broker. The things she went though as part of her training were pretty intense, especially when things went wrong and she meets The Scarecrow. He is such a disturbing villain! He seriously gave me the creeps.
There's quite a bit of romance in The Masked Maiden. I was hoping to get some kissing, and I was certainly not disappointed! I do think that maybe there was a bit too much going on in Aria's love life, but I did like how she handled everything. She basically does what she wants and isn't ashamed! That is wonderful! Yes, there is some love geometry going on here, and no, I'm not on any particular team. Although I'd totally be cheering for Sam if she were in the running!
The Masked Maiden was just another fun and exciting addition to this series. I'm really enjoying watching Aria try to figure out where she belongs: with her own kind who kicked her out, or with the humans who can never fully understand her? There are several surprises throughout and I can't wait for more!
