Дело было вечером, делать было нечего и захотелось мне почитать что-то легкое, забавное, но при этом достаточно интересное, чтобы книгу все же дочитать до конца. Думала я, думала и решила, что нужно попробовать надкусить «Быть Джейми Бейкер», потому что:
а) мне понравился юмор в цитатах, что я видела до этого;
б) я люблю тему супергероев или около того;
в) перевода новой книги из серии «Медиатр» еще нет и выбор был невелик.

И должна признать, что эта книга и правда удовлетворила все мои «хочухи». Я хотела милый подростковый романчик с элементами сай-фая (или куда у нас там относится тема суперспособностей)? Да это история про Джейми, девушку обладающую суперсилами, но в первую очередь это милая девчачья книжка полная флирта между героями, романтических сцен и мимими моментов. Только если в романах причина «мы-не-можем-быть-вместе» обычно весьма посредственна, то тут проблема в том, что Джейми своего избранника может случайно… ну как бы убить. Совсем.

На самом деле я сто лет, как не читала подобных книг, где герой обладал суперспособностями и при этом не был бы очередной красивой, но опасной ночной тварью. Или чтобы эта книга не была при этом фэнтези. Фильмы? Сериалы? Полным полно. Книги? Придется потрудиться, чтобы вспомнить хоть парочку достойных. Поэтому «Быть Джейми Бейкер» была для меня неплохим открытием, разбавившим мой tbr лист.

А история это о том, как самый популярный мальчик школы, булочка с корицей и просто обаяшка Райан запал на самую сексуальную девушку школы, но в тоже время эта девушка самый настоящий изгой и фрик. Искра. Буря. Безумие.

Мне понравились герои. Райан, который упорно добивался внимания Джейми и не переставал шутить, да он по классике жанра «первый парень на деревне», но при этом он душа компании, весельчак и заводила. Мне понравилась Джейми, которая может откусить вам руку, выплюнуть и сказать, что было невкусно. Да, она порой раздражала, но это делало ее более живой и по-своему милой. И мне жутко понравилась химия между ними, потому что я вообще люблю такие парочки.

Сам сюжет книги состоит из двух частей, которые очень гармонично переплетены. Первая – романтические отношения Райана и Джейми, которые по своей сути довольно запутаны благодаря тайным способностям Джейми. И вторая часть истории – сами способности девушки и ее попытки скрыться от любопытных глаз. В итоге у автора вышла милая, забавная история с которой очень здорово скоротать вечерок (в моем случае утро в заполненной электричке), поднять себе настроение и двигаться дальше по списку. Однако если вы ждете книгу о девушке, которая спасает мир, используя свои силы, то вы будете разочарованы. Способности Джейми здесь лишь фон, дополнительная тема для романса и его развития. Но лично я этого и хотела, поэтому мне все зашло.

Being Jamie Baker pudo pasar por una muy divertidísima novela juvenil ligera, pero Kelly Oram tiene algo, no me pregunten qué exactamente porque aun no lo sé, puro talento puedo decirles, que convirtió a este libro en algo recontra bueno.

Sin duda Ryan Miller es una de esas razones. Es un personaje muy bien hecho, últimamente tengo muy poca tolerancia a los protagonistas masculinos imbéciles y ególatras, pero Ryan Miller tiene un maldito encanto del cuál simplemente Jamie y yo no podemos resistirnos, solo podemos adorar esa boba sonrisa suya, esa confianza demasiado irritante pero un tanto inocente, se hizo imposible que me cayera mal. Es tan lindo el maldito.

Jamie Baker es una de esas protagonista que imitamos, de las que pensamos "¡Caray, quiero ser como ella!" (Sí, yo pienso y digo caray, soy muy vintage), no solo sus superpoderes, que son realmente geniales, también es su manera de expresarse, su personalidad, ¡Todo!

Como la gran nerd que soy, amé el libro, toda la ciencia ficción de la historia, el romance y la comedia muy bien balanceados. Y por supuesto, la incertidumbre y el misterio que acompaña a todo super héroe (aunque Jamie diga que no lo es)

Jamie no es torpe, es muy descarada y sabe (a su manera) lo que quiere ¿Vas a perderte de esta divertidísima y romántica historia?

Very close to 3.5 stars. This book is absolutely adorable and fun. Jamie is the sort of character who would normally drive me crazy because she's all angry and obstinate, but hearing the really rational and understandable thoughts behind her behavior kept me from being aggravated at all.

And you can't not love Ryan Miller. Not because he's handsome and charming and therefore, obviously, perfect. But because he's not perfect. He's cute when he's angry and frustrated. He's vulnerable and stupid and completely annoying and immature and really sweet about it. And terribly amusing when he's witty. Of all the perfect boyfriend characters in literature these days, he manages to be both perfect and all too human.

Plot-wise it's a lot like Twilight and [b:Starcrossed|9462795|Starcrossed (Starcrossed, #1)|Josephine Angelini|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1358266716s/9462795.jpg|10862992] (or maybe I just think that because of the electricity angle). I liked the pace and how it moved (mostly). At first I thought it didn't end when it was supposed to, but that final sequence really did finish out the story nicely. And I loved how it came back around again. I don't know if it's picking on an indie book to say that it could have used a little more polish, in the presentation and in the editing. There was a glibness to the whole super powers thing that didn't quite settle for me. If felt... too easy, slightly contrived. Which is a difficult criticism to make because I liked the story - I wouldn't change what it is. And I didn't need more explanation or scientific details on how it all happened. That wasn't the issue. But there was a flippancy, maybe, to it. A convenience that kept me from really embracing this world as a world and not just a story about super powers as a superficial plot device. I didn't need it to be anything different than what it was; I would have liked it to be integrated a bit more seamlessly.

But other than that, I had a lot of fun reading this book. I really liked all the characters. I liked the depth they had when things weren't what they seemed and when it was funny. I liked the way things changed and how very sweet and cute it was.

You're having a rough week. Life is taking its toll on you. All you want to do is sit and relax, laugh a little, feel warm inside again. Maybe immerse yourself in someone else's life for a short while. Someone else's relationship. God knows you need a good ship to board on this empty pier.

You pick up BEING JAMIE BAKER. And it's everything you've wanted it to be.

I've read this YA fantasy romance three times so far, each time in one sitting. I have forced my cousins to read it and fall in love with it as well. I have recommended it to anyone and everyone who would listen, and some who won't. Because I seriously adore this book. I dare you to read it and tell me you weren't grinning so widely your jaw hurt throughout it. DARE YOU.

So, spoiler alert - you need to get this book. NOW. I'm saying this for your own good.

The best thing about this book is that it makes you desperately wish these characters were real people that you could meet in real life and have real conversations with. And really, isn't that one of the best things a book can do to you?

First, you've got the titular Jamie. Her snark and sarcasm are her main choice of weapon... if you don't consider all the superpowers. Oh, this girl. I love how human she felt to me. I loved how she made me laugh and smile. I loved how she sometimes made the wrong choices or did things I strongly disagreed with. I love how she grew throughout the book. I love HER, okay?

But I am in love with Ryan Miller and their relationship. Like, sometimes you want the book boyfriend all for yourself. And sometimes... sometimes you know you can never compare to their true love, would never fit him as well as she does, and that's okay. That's okay because you're a little bit in love with the both of them, and you love seeing the stars in their eyes when they look at each other and the way they move around and with each other as if they're the other's anchor and sun.

Still, let it be noted that Ryan Miller is at the top of my book boyfriend list, even years later. I fangirl over this guy, okay? it's this bad. Or this good. Depends on who you ask. He is the perfect blend of adorable sweetness, with a shot of cockiness and a dash of condescension. In the best possible ways, I assure you. This guy knows what--and who--he wants. He is not afraid to tell Jamie how she feels and he wills it to become reality just from the sheer, unwavering sureness he presents. And he never gives up. Never. You might as well admit defeat before he starts because this mountain is not budging!

And as you've probably guessed, I adored their romance. It's the kind of romance that makes you sigh, and you don't know if it's because it just fills you with satisfaction or because you want a relationship like that for yourself and goddammit why can't you have this one little thing??

Okay, got sidetracked. Anyways, Ryan and Jamie bring out the best in each other. And the chemistry between them is, shall we say, electrifying. Both figuratively and literally.

And yes, this book is not perfect. The reason Jamie got her superpowers is not quite satisfying. The villain is okay-ish and his plot is so-so. Neither of those things mattered a lick to me, since if you haven't figured yet, Ryan & Jamie gave me life and that's what I was here for, but I feel it's necessary to mention anyway.

So... this book was perfect. For me.

This was so un-freaking-believably cute!

Oh my god, I am giggling my head off. This is one of those stories who makes you feel all good and warm and giddily on the insides.

This was a great story, really heartwarming.

I knew who the bad guy was all along, though, but the fact it didn't damage the book for me is more than enough proof that this is very close to perfection for me. I love this book.

I think I'm going to smile for days, now...
