This is another stand alone instalment of the family saga begun in Chasing Rainbows. After an uneasy start to their marriage, Cherry and Lance Melchior are now living on a small working farm. It's a very different life for both Lance, a once-rich playboy, and Cherry, a former kitchen-maid. But when Lance's brother dies he becomes Lord Melchoir, and must return to Bristol to run the family estate. This is a difficult time for Cherry, and the reappearance of her roguish brother, Brian, doesn't help matters. Against the background of the General Strike, in which Lance is involved as a special constable, Cherry and Lance strive to make their marriage work. But Brian is determined to destroy the couple's happiness and, for a time, it seems that he might succeed.
