Of Flame and Light by Cecy Robson proved to be an enjoyable read. I went into the story with high expectations and the author did not disappoint. Once again, I had a wonderful time visiting the unique world created by Cecy Robson. This is the seventh book in the Weird Girl series and the second book with Taran Wird being the lead character.

Tara the second oldest of the Wird sisters has a lot on her plate. Her relationship with Gemini is on the fritz. Added to that, she was trying to gain control of her magical artificial arm, which has a mind of its own. As a result, she lost control of her magic, ultimately placing those she loves in danger. This was a major problem for her has she hated the lack of control and the impact it had on her family. To address the issue, she reluctantly agreed to train with the witches to get her magic under control. Not an ideal situation, but a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do.

Taran is strong willed, confident, and tough talking, but in this installment revealed her vulnerable side. Despite the obstacles faced during her time with the witches, she never once thought of giving up. Her fighting spirit came alive in this installment. She came and conquered self-doubt, heartache, witches and zombies. Through it all her humour, her willingness to help the underdog, and her penchant to speak her mind no matter how crass it may sound remained constant.

Both she and Gemini put me through the ringer. Their failure to communicate their feelings had me on an emotional roller coaster. If it were possible, I would knock some sense into them. Clearly, they loved each other, but their stubborn pride proved a hindrance. They shared some sizzling moments and I wished at each page turn they would get their act together.

This installment provided exciting and intense action scenes, from Taran’s training to the battle against the dark witch and her zombie minions.

Taran experienced several. weird, but hilarious moments during her time with the witches. There was never a dull moment.

I loved how the author resolved the issues highlighted throughout the story, however; she left the door open signalling there was more in store for Taran. I am eager to learn what that will be.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Overall an entertaining story and one I would recommend to fans of Urban Fantasy.

I really think this is one of those books that, while you CAN read it as a stand-alone and enjoy it, I would definitely have understood more and enjoyed it more if I had been following along through the entire Weird Girls series. So while I was somewhat confused at points, there’s enough explanation to get a who’s-who and a general idea of the supernatural creatures and world. I definitely plan to start at the beginning and read through at some point. Actually vaguely considering obtaining the other 6 and binge-reading on a weekend…this was a terrific feel-good book and I could use some more.

The plot never stagnates and I was CERTAINLY never bored. This was the main part where I felt like I was missing things, as this book focused on the werewolves and witches and only briefly mentioned the vampires (which seem to have played a bigger part in previous books). Of course Taran’s strange limb and the new magic fusing with her old starts the story off, but it’s soon overtaken by the bigger, overarching problem of a dark, wicked power rising. I liked the conflict between the weres and the witches, but I wish I understood it a little better. I’m guessing the zombies were new to this series?

Taran is a hilarious narrator. Her descriptions of her attempts at “training” with the witches had me snickering as I read. Other than that, honestly…she was pretty bitchy. I wasn’t super fond of her and found her kind of hard to relate to…her strange powers, those I could imagine. But her perfect (except for the arm, which is basically a crazy prosthetic she can’t take off) body, her constant tight dresses and platform heels…THAT I didn’t get. Same goes for her sisters, who all seem to have perky boobs, tiny waists, flat stomachs…yadda yadda. Also, there are SO MANY strapping, hot werewolf men in this book…holy bejeezus, I felt like I was constantly fanning myself! Gemini, Koda, Aric, Bren…phew. She definitely has the sex appeal of werewolves on point.

After A Curse Unbroken, Taran and Gemini's relationship is in tatters and the confident Taran is shattered by the loss. This is all made more painful by the fact that the magic which created her new arm is conflicting with her own magic. Not only does the arm seem to have a plan of it's own, but the conflict is threatening to burn Taran from the inside. Her only hope might be the one person Taran hates most, the beautiful and absolutely perfect, Genevieve, head bitch...I mean, witch of the coven who has been trying to seduce Gemini away from Taran for months.

Taran is now under Vieve's magical thumb training with the novice witches of the coven. Suffering humiliations galore at the hands of witches isn't bad enough, but Taran is subjected to watching Genevieve fawn all over Gemini. Gemini is the liaison between the witches and the pack, but Taran's heart breaks wide open listening to all the witches gossip about how hot and sexy they find Genevieve's lover. My heart was breaking along with Taran's.

The story is not all heartbreak though, we meet new friends and there is a new danger when Taran is sent to find a former witch from the coven, who isn't lacking in power like the coven believed. Turns out she is quite the necromancer with plans to raise an army of the dead, gooey zombies.

As always, this story is full of action, excitement, magic, laughs and more than a few tears from Taran and from me.
