I liked the premise and thought the world-building was good, though the story felt a little rushed at times. And while the "Chosen One" trope has been played out many times before, the plot itself was original.
I also liked the characters on the island, but I felt like they could have been fleshed out just a little more. It would have added more emotional weight at the end if we had a chance to get to know them a bit more, although maybe that will happen in the second book.
And I hope there's a second book because this one ends on a massive cliffhanger, and I can't wait to find out what happens next!
In short, this was a cute, quick, and fun adventure story that I think middle-grade readers will enjoy.
